Plan 05 · 1 day

Subculture Tour

Den Den Town, Mandarake, and the corners you came for.

Osaka's answer to Akihabara, walked in a single dense afternoon. With one rule the maid-café-curious need to read first.

Why this plan exists

Every plan on Beyond Kansai is built around one idea, not a checklist. Some travelers want to see all the famous temples. Other travelers want to find the only permanent Pokémon Café west of Tokyo. The first kind doesn't need this site. The second kind is who I write for.

Subculture Tour is the 1 day route I'd hand to someone who already knew what they wanted out of the trip — no padding, no detour to a famous place that has nothing to do with the theme.

Who it's for

You're here partly for the anime, manga, and figure side of Japan. You want the shops, not the museum experience. This plan trades Tokyo's Akihabara for the Osaka equivalent — smaller area, denser stores, fewer people.

What's in it

  • Den Den Town vs Ota Road — what the difference actually is
  • Mandarake Grandchaos, NERDROOM, Kotobukiya, amiami
  • The maid café three-rule scam-prevention checklist
  • Why this is denser and more walkable than Akihabara now
  • Where to land afterwards for a real Osaka dinner
The day-by-day breakdown — with timings, transit costs, ticket links, and the small rules that decide whether the day works — is the part of this plan still being drafted. Coming in the next update.

Where to start right now

The full day-by-day version of this plan is in production. While you wait for it, you can already do the prep that determines whether the trip works at all — booking the reservations that fill up first, and reading the linked spot pages for the individual stops on the route.

Email me if you have a fixed date — I'll point you at the booking that decides whether this plan is viable for your week.
